could reach 5 · moderate risk if wildfire smoke moves in
how can i tell if wildfire smoke is responsible for this air pollution?
wildfire smoke could be part of it. the FireSmoke Canada map shows where ground-level smoke is expected to move.
it can help you plan, but it isn’t South Okanagan’s official AQHI forecast or an air quality warning.
i’m curious, why can the sky look smoky when the AQHI says something else?
yeah, that can be confusing. smoke can sit high above South Okanagan without causing the same exposure at ground level.
the reverse can happen too: the air near the ground can be unhealthy even when the sky looks clear.
what can i do when it’s smoky?
spend less time outside and move hard activity indoors. keep windows and doors closed when your home can stay safely cool.
if your home gets too hot, cooling comes first. use air conditioning or go somewhere cooler with cleaner air if you can.
what helps if i still need to be outside?
a snug NIOSH-certified N95 can reduce the fine smoke particles you breathe in. it won’t filter smoke gases.
it’s an extra layer, not a reason to keep exercising hard or stay outside longer.
about this website
should i trust this website?
yeah. it uses Environment Canada data to show what South Okanagan’s air is like.
it can’t tell you exactly what the air is like on your street.
is this an official government website?
no. Ehtoz is independent. it uses official government data, but it isn’t affiliated with South Okanagan, British Columbia, or Environment Canada.
who made this?
i’m Amrit Sharma. i live in Toronto and have spent more than a decade working on air quality and climate change.
i serve on the board of OpenAQ, helping make air-quality data more open and useful. the Asian Development Bank recently invited me to help develop a regional clean-air action plan with countries across South Asia.
i work at ecobee, designing grid-resiliency programs that help keep the lights on during heat waves and winter storms.
what should i do next?
enjoy the day. if you’ll be outside for hours, it’s worth checking again later.
if this helped, share it with a friend, neighbour, or group chat.
